I have had guinea pigs for about 7 years. I keep them as a hobby and they are very much my pets and are not kept as a business. I am not overly concerned about whether they are good examples of their breed, I just love them for the wonderful little characters they are. I do breed from them and I think it is so exciting waiting to see what colours the babies will be. As a result I do sometimes have babies available for sale to good homes. I would love to keep them all but I have not got enough space to do that.

I have now decided to take on another breed in addition to my rexes. I have decided on Black Tans because I think they are stunning!

My guinea pigs were kept in hutches in my garage which was totally taken over by them. It is just as well I am not car proud as there was no way my car would ever have seen the garage. I have now decided to move them into the summer house so they don't have to share their space with the lawn mower and the rest of the gardening bits. I do not heat it but the protection from the elements the summer house gives is more than adequate. I have insulated the walls to keep it warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

I do sometimes show my guinea pigs. I have only entered pet classes so far and it is so much fun. It is great to meet a lot of people who are as mad about my little furry friends as I am. I am hoping to be able to show my black tans in breed classes in the future.

I am a real animal lover and have kept many different animals over time. I currently also have two dogs, a labrador and a jack russell. They get on really well with my pigs which is good. The jack russell sometimes gives my pigs a wash when he squeezes his tongue through the mesh when my pigs are out in the garden runs.

I must say thank-you to my very tolerant husband who, until he met me did not have any pets. Well he certainly has now!
