A guinea pigs diet needs to consist of four things:
1) Water
A constant supply of fresh water must always be available
2) Hay
This is essential. Guinea pigs need hay to ensure there is enough fibre in their diet. It acts as roughage and aids digestion. It also gives them something to nibble on which keeps their ever growing teeth worn down.
3) Cereal Mix
A plentiful supply of a good quality guinea pig mix should always be available. This will make up the main part of their diet so make sure it is good quality. I use Johnsons or Gerty. Do not be tempted to use mixes designed for other animals. Rabbit mixes will not contain vitamin C which is essential for guinea pigs. Some rabbit mixes also contain ACS (an anti-coccidiosis medication) which is toxic to guinea pigs.
4) Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Matter
Guinea pigs need vitamins , in particular vitamin C , to keep them healthy. This vitamin is rapidly lost in dried food so to ensure they get all the nutrients they need, your guinea pig will need a regular supply of fresh food. My guinea pig’s favourite, and the cheapest, is grass. Make sure it is clean and free from chemicals. Lawn cuttings should not be given as they ferment quickly and can make your guinea pig ill. I go out with a pair of scissors and cut it fresh for them. There are many different things you can feed them and through trial and error you will find out what your guinea pigs favourites are. If you ensure they get a variety, you can be confident your guinea pig is getting all the nutrients it needs. Here is a list of some guinea pigs favourites.
Broccoli
Cabbage
Cauliflower leaves – eat the white bit yourself as it the leaves they relish
Carrots
Pepper
Cucumber
Celery
Parsley – very high in vitamin C
Lettuce – but not too much as it can cause upset stomachs if they eat too much
Sweetcorn – they love the leaves too. Just make sure you remove the stringy silks
Melon – especially cold from the fridge in the summer
Apple – not too much though as the acid in it can cause mouth sores
Dandelion Leaves – no guinea pig can resist them
Groundsel
